About 200 people watched at Herreman's Restaurant Tuesday as Sally Carpenter, business manager of McGovern Enterprises, received the Krivsky Award from the Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce honoring the chamber's business person of the year.

Chamber executive director Anne Smith said the award was established in 1966 in memory of Judy Krivsky, a former chamber president.

Carpenter said the award came as a complete surprise.

"I was overwhelmed," she said.

The award includes $600 from the Krivsky family, Herreman's Restaurant and McGovern Enterprises that will be donated to a charity chosen by Carpenter.

A 29-year employee of McGovern Enterprises, which operates a motel and restaurant, Carpenter also has served on the city Tourism Commission and as chairwoman for three years of the Georgia O'Keeffe celebration. She also twice has been named Wisconsin innkeeper of the year by the Wisconsin Innkeepers.

After work, she is a mentor and tutor to young students who need special help with their life situations or homework.

Carpenter and her husband, Frank, who is retired from Oscar Mayer Foods, have four grown children and five grandchildren.

"We're busy, my husband and I, and we love it," she said.
